I study gene flow and molecular evolution in natural populations with a particular interest in examining the effects of asymmetric dispersal. In recent years these approaches have been used to explore the association of obligate parasitic larvae with host fishes, microbial diversity on corals associated with bleaching and white pox disease, and most recently our group is focused on “sea star wasting disease”, a pandemic that began in 2013 and still has an unclear etiology. This work involves population surveys, population genetics, genomics, and lab experiments.

Utilizing wildlife models along with human studies to discover environmental and ecological influences on sex determination, sexual development, reproductive health, and aging. My lab and I are particularly interested in how contaminants that interfere with the endocrine system act during critical developmental windows to affect later health trajectories.
